Introduction to Addiction
October 16 2015
Well, there are different definitions of addiction. But let’s take a quick look at what Wikipedia says “Addiction is a state characterized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli, despite adverse consequences.” May be it’s because of your ego or delusion of being in control that is making you think that you are not addicted to anything. So, you may say, I don’t have to read this, I am a free man. But, even if you are not addicted or you think you are not addicted, the information mentioned in the following articles can help you understand the addiction and can even allow you to help people around you, who are addicted.
What we get wrong about addiction is, we think druggists, smokers, alcoholics and compulsive gamblers are the only addict. Although these are the most commonly seen and destructive types of addictions, but people can also get addicted to overeating (in some case undereating too), shopping too much clothes, gadgets or things they hardly use, playing excessive video games, watching too much TV, online gambling, pornography, sex, online chatting, exercising, working etc. Well, as a whole we can say, everything that gives some kind of good feeling or pleasure are addictive and can cause addiction or dependence if done in uncontrolled or unhealthy way.
Some of you might get surprised, “WHAT! Addiction to exercise and working?” and some of you might get proud “YES! I knew procrastinating to exercising and working was always a good thing.” But I wanna say sorry for those guys, who don’t want to exercise or work because only very-very few people get addicted to them and it’s insane to avoid exercising or working due to fear of addiction. By the way, I don’t think you are going to stop eating due to fear of becoming addicted to overeating.
While pondering over your life, you may not actually like to call yourself an addict, but still you are concerned about your habits or compulsion which is leading you to wrong path, despite your best efforts to avoid it. Somewhere inside, you may feel like something is not going good and something needs to be changed. Well, life is a journey and in this journey you might have fallen into traps of some bad habits knowingly or unknowingly. But it’s not the end of the world. There is always hope, no matter how bad situation you are in. There is a bright light waiting for you just a little bit away from here. And I am ready to guide you towards that light, if you are willing to just devote little of your precious time for reading these articles. Addiction is your enemy and understanding it helps you to beat it easily.
Well, I have tried hard to make these articles simple and short as much as possible, so that you will not get bored and you can walk away with all the skills and tools you need to deal with your bad habits.
I will like to lists some very common signs, which indicates you may be dependent or addicted to something but you don’t need to panic, there is always a solution;
1. You are concerned that your particular habit or behavior is disturbing other aspects of your life like family, career, finance, health etc.
2. You may have already tried quitting or reducing the behavior but failed several times.
3. You need to lie to people around you, in order to hide or support your behavior and also feel guilty at the same time.
Before moving forward, let’s get familiar with these two terms:
Here tolerance means capacity to tolerate addictive substance or behavior. You may have experienced or noticed how your earlier dose or earlier behavior no longer satisfies you and you need to increase your dose or get involved in more extreme or novel behavior in order to get satisfied. This is due to increase in tolerance level.
This means symptoms or problems you will face while quitting addiction. Like strong urges to try addictive behavior you want to quit, irritation, sleeplessness, boredom, depression etc.
